Spring To Academic Readiness (STAR)

STAR (Spring to Academic Readiness), while open to all first-year, first-time in college students, targets first-year, first-time students from underrepresented populations admitted to UNC Charlotte to begin during the spring semester.

STAR scholars will participate in a two-day bridge program prior to the first day of classes for the spring semester. STAR scholars will engage with UNC Charlotte faculty and staff, and peer mentors in one-on-one and group settings, tour campus, and participate in hands-on and interactive activities that will aid them in becoming successful in their transition to UNC Charlotte and throughout their college career. STAR scholars will learn how to best access and utilize campus resources during engaging sessions. Sessions will focus on the knowledge and skills necessary for college success, including academic advising and goal setting, financial aid, effective communication, time management, and other critical skills.

STAR scholars will be assigned to one of two cohorts where they will enroll in 12 credit hours of general education courses together. Cohorts provide students an active, interactive, and dynamic setting to grow their knowledge and skills. Each cohort will bring STAR scholars together to continue to build community, foster creativity, build leadership skills, and encourage greater progress. Courses that STAR scholars will enroll in include:

  • University College 1200: STAR Spring First-Year Seminar

  • University Writing Program 1104: Writing & Inquiry Academic Context/Studio

  • Liberal Studies 2102: Global Connections

  • Social Science or Natural Science w/o Lab

By participating in STAR, scholars will become acclimated to campus life at UNC Charlotte, gain access to student services and campus resources, and learn effective academic skills. STAR scholars will build a sense of community and develop a network of support by engaging with UNC Charlotte faculty, staff, peer mentors, and current UTOP students and alumni.
